Homeschool or After-school Volunteers: What I need to know

Before facilitating a NoticeAbility course, please be aware of the following considerations:

  • You don’t have to have a teaching background to facilitate a NoticeAbility course: Each lesson plan has been built for you and contains a teacher’s script (should you need it). It is essential, however, that you complete the Instructor Training before facilitating a class.
  • You will need a minimum of 3 students. Project exercises are done in teams of 3.
  • Your students should be identified, diagnosed, or suspected to have dyslexia. NoticeAbility does not require a dyslexia diagnosis per se, but instructor should be aware that this term is used throughout the course.
  • Outcomes: The coursework seeks to boost self-esteem, academic tenacity and reduce the stigma students feel about their dyslexia.
  • It's important to schedule class meetings with a frequency that allows a trusting relationship to build among the students. Ideally students will work together for a minimum of 1 hour, twice a week.
  • NoticeAbility’s curricula culminate in a student final presentation, preferably in front of a small audience. This process is essential for students to receive the affirmation of their new strength-based paradigm of dyslexia. NoticeAbility will consider posting photos and videos of student presentations that are submitted to us.

NoticeAbility has created a financial aid application. Please contact [email protected] for more information.
